Dear Future Whales,
Over the weekend, my wife and I migrated to West Virginia for the wedding of a close friend. The autumn leaves were beautiful and it was a healthy reminder that there is more to life than illiquid JPEGs. In addition to sharing my favorite photos, the true highlight in this week’s note is tied to Blur.io and their current airdrop of BLUR tokens. I also share a community-centric podcast.
Summary of today's notes:
Seasons Still Change During Crypto Winter
Airdrop Season Kicks Off with Blur.io
Recommended Podcast: Community Building with Alex Taub
Seasons are changing during Crypto Winter:
This was taken from Valley Falls State Park in West Virginia. It’s a beautiful place this time of year.
This is Alpha! For those in the U.S. who are about to celebrate Thanksgiving, I highly recommend trying to re-create this Sweet Potato Pie (pizza) from Mountain St Brewery. The brown things are roasted marshmallows and pecans! The sauce is sweet potato mixed with some condensed milk. Topped off with a caramel drizzle. We actually went here twice!
Also, if you can’t seem to step away from the cold of crypto winter, then take a few moments to watch our most recent Web3 Tea where we discuss NFTs in the midst of a freeze.
This is the REAL Alpha: Airdrop from Blur.io:
What is it?
Blur.io is a marketplace aggregator which facilitates quick NFT trading and enables users to list across platforms simultaneously. It’s fast, accurate and free for everyone, forever!
Airdrop 1:
If you have had NFT trading activity over the last 6 months, then you may qualify for a certain number of care packages. Each package contains x amount of BLUR tokens which will be available in early 2023 and each is differentiated by rarity. You have less than two weeks to claim your airdrops for this user onboarding initiative.
Airdrop 2:
There is a second airdrop coming! It will be much bigger and you can adjust your chances related to the rarity of your boxes by keeping your loyalty score high. To reward users for listing multiple items, trying out various features and conducting their secondary transactions from Blur, users can increase their chances at better rewards. Read about it here.
Podcast: Alex Taub from Truth Labs, creator of the Illuminati and Goblintown NFT projects, on community building.
The takeaway from this podcast is the idea of partnering with unique projects and communities as a way to reach a larger audience. In the podcast, Alex gives an example of how Marvel targets specific demographics with Deadpool and Captain Marvel, and then brings them together into one fanbase and community. The question I have is which community should we co-host our next in-person event with? Send me a note at mbartlett@vaneck.com with your ideas!

Cryptocurrency is a digital representation of value that functions as a medium of exchange, a unit of account, or a store of value, but it does not have legal tender status. Cryptocurrencies are sometimes exchanged for U.S. dollars or other currencies around the world, but they are not generally backed or supported by any government or central bank. Their value is completely derived by market forces of supply and demand, and they are more volatile than traditional currencies. The value of cryptocurrency may be derived from the continued willingness of market participants to exchange fiat currency for cryptocurrency, which may result in the potential for permanent and total loss of value of a particular cryptocurrency should the market for that cryptocurrency disappear. Cryptocurrencies are not covered by either FDIC or SIPC insurance. Legislative and regulatory changes or actions at the state, federal, or international level may adversely affect the use, transfer, exchange, and value of cryptocurrency.
Investing in cryptocurrencies comes with a number of risks, including volatile market price swings or flash crashes, market manipulation, and cybersecurity risks. In addition, cryptocurrency markets and exchanges are not regulated with the same controls or customer protections available in equity, option, futures, or foreign exchange investing. There is no assurance that a person who accepts a cryptocurrency as payment today will continue to do so in the future.
Investors should conduct extensive research into the legitimacy of each individual cryptocurrency, including its platform, before investing. The features, functions, characteristics, operation, use and other properties of the specific cryptocurrency may be complex, technical, or difficult to understand or evaluate. The cryptocurrency may be vulnerable to attacks on the security, integrity or operation, including attacks using computing power sufficient to overwhelm the normal operation of the cryptocurrency’s blockchain or other underlying technology. Some cryptocurrency transactions will be deemed to be made when recorded on a public ledger, which is not necessarily the date or time that a transaction may have been initiated.
· Investors must have the financial ability, sophistication and willingness to bear the risks of an investment and a potential total loss of their entire investment in cryptocurrency.
· An investment in cryptocurrency is not suitable or desirable for all investors.
· Cryptocurrency has limited operating history or performance.
· Fees and expenses associated with a cryptocurrency investment may be substantial.
There may be risks posed by the lack of regulation for cryptocurrencies and any future regulatory developments could affect the viability and expansion of the use of cryptocurrencies. Investors should conduct extensive research before investing in cryptocurrencies.
